Weihnachtsausstellung "Heilige Familie"

Christmas is generally regarded as a family celebration. This is why the 2024 Christmas exhibition focuses on the “family” in addition to traditional Christmas representations. We almost always associate family with love, security and solidarity. We feel the longing for family especially at Christmas time.

The exhibition also refers to the exemplary role of the Holy Family - Mary, Joseph and Jesus. At Christmas, they are the main protagonists of the family theme. Selected examples from the crib collection of the Graz Diocesan Museum invite visitors to marvel at the family gatherings surrounding the birth of Jesus. Shepherds' wives and husbands visit the Holy Family in the stable, congratulate and celebrate. The middle-class families of the Kochler Nativity scene discuss the sensational appearance of the exotic kings. The figurative crib landscapes, box cribs from the Baroque and Biedermeier periods through to contemporary cribs and pictures in traditional to provocative imagery depict ideas of family and family life.
