The Vorau monastery was founded in 1163 by Margrave Otakar III of Traungau. founded. It is a religious center for education and culture and, as a community of priests, has the task of accompanying the people in the parishes of the Vorau pastoral care area on their journey through life.
A defensive wall, remains of the moat and 15 towers are reminiscent of times when you could still protect and defend yourself with these means. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the monastery complex was rebuilt and given its current appearance, which has lost none of its luster to this day due to the reconstruction after the Second World War and the art of restorers and local companies.
The center is formed by the baroque collegiate church, built as a pillar church, with the high altar “Assumption of Mary” and the pulpit.
The imposing sacristy (1716) is decorated with the fresco of heaven and hell by the painter Johann Cyriak Hackhofer. Hackhofer came from Tyrol and has also immortalized himself with his works in the Festenburg and in many Styrian churches.
