Cooling waters under a green canopy of leaves
The Heligengeistklamm gorge is located in Leutschach and leads from the Spitzmühle mill near Schloßberg to the church of Sveti Duh na Ostrem Vrhu/Heiligengeist on Osterberg in Selnica ob Dravi, Slovenia.
The stream that supplies the Heilligengeistklamm gorge with water and gurgles towards the valley has its source on this Osterberg. The hike takes us through a cool, damp ravine forest, which is a welcome alternative, especially on hot summer days. The forest is made up of mountain elm, fir, hornbeam, spruce and beech. In their shade, quaint plants such as ostrich fern and deer tongue thrive. Splashes of color are provided by the yellow-flowered mountain golden nettle, the white-flowered meadow chervil, the marsh marigold and the white to lilac-flowered moon violet. Raspberries grow in lighter areas and offer their fruit for snacking.
From the animal world, the fire salamander feels very much at home here. It can often be observed during and after rainfall. But Europe's largest dragonfly, the large damselfly with its black and yellow striped body, can also be found here.
The hiking trail begins around 150 m southwest of the parking lot at the Spitzmühle mill and provides access to the long-distance hiking trail “From Glacier to Wine” in Sveti Duh.
