Schwanberg Castle

Bad Schwanberg

The Renaissance castle in Bad Schwanberg is a popular sight.

Historically, Schwanberg Castle developed in the middle of the 15th century from the western wing, the old castle which had been converted into a fortress under Emperor Friedrich III. Almost every century there was a change of ownership. In 1891 Prince Liechtenstein sold the castle to the Province of Styria. Until 2015, it was a state nursing home for the mentally ill and was run as a branch of the Sigmund Freud Clinic Graz. The Renaissance palace has been rebuilt or renovated several times in the past decades. Just behind the castle is the former Schwanberg Old Castle, where archaeological excavations can be seen today.
