Wallfahrtskirche St. Veit in der Südsteiermark

St. Veit in der Südsteiermark

The baroque pilgrimage church of St. Vitus, with impressive paintings on the ceiling vault, created by the painter Felix Barazutti between 1914 and 1921, is known far beyond the boundaries of the municipality. The master builder was Joseph Hueber (1716 - 1787).

The figures bear the facial features of his employees, financial backers and people from the region. Among others, Karl Marx is depicted speaking to workers with his hand raised. The high altar is also worth seeing. The altar leaf was created in 1752 by Franz Xaver Palko and the sculptures are by Josef Schokotnigg and Veit Königer.

In addition, the church has an organ by Christoph Egedacher, who built it for Mariazell in 1688/89, and it was installed here in 1753. The ceiling fresco above the organ shows Pope Pius X as a Styrian speciality and Karl Marx in the background. The church is dedicated to St. Vitus (June 15, St. Vitus' Day).
