The Römerhöhle is an accessible mining gallery that houses a show exhibition on the 2,000-year history of this oldest, still active mine in Austria. The focus is on the formation of the coral reef, the mine in Roman times, the concentration camp of World War II and a peace tunnel. In Aflenz an der Sulm rises a partly forest-covered hill about 40 meters high. No one would suspect that inside it there is a huge hollow with a base area of 24,000 m². The Romans built an underground quarry here soon after the birth of Christ for the administrative city of Flavia Solva. The sand-lime stone there is easy to extract and work, so parts of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna and many other buildings were built at least in part with Aflenz stone. The Aflenz a.d. Sulm concentration camp was one of over 40 subcamps of the Mauthausen concentration camp. More than 900 concentration camp prisoners were transported to the camp in Aflenz. The hard work was done day and night, in two shifts of twelve hours each, at a great pace. Numerous prisoners died as a result of this inhumane forced labor. In the mine gallery, which is easy to walk through, there is a show exhibition on the 2,000-year history of this oldest mine in Austria, which is still active today.
