Erna von Gaderthurn breaks free from the grip of her domineering mother, whose arrogance becomes unbearable for her, and leaves her parents' castle in South Tyrol to take up a teaching position in Blons, a small village in the Vorarlberg Alps. Like many young women, she lost her husband shortly after their wedding in the last year of the war. Erna's appearance in the late summer of 1953 in that mountain village at the foot of Montcalv caused a great stir. Her beautiful face in the shadow of the wide brim of her hat, the silk costume, the crocheted gloves, her springy gait. The men twist their gnarled necks, while the women sense mischief.
The "Breath of Heaven" tells the love story between the impoverished noblewoman Erna von Gaderthurn, who at the age of 41 decides to start a new life as a primary school teacher in Blons, a small village in the Voralberg Alps, and a headstrong primary school teacher who was also one of the first avalanche researchers in Vorarlberg.
The romantic drama reaches its climax with the historic avalanche disaster of 1954 in the Great Walser Valley, the largest ever to have occurred in the Alpine region. Back then, 57 people died in Blons alone.
