A journey of discovery through the animal world of all continents - The grand opening of the natural history museum will take place in May 2025 – stay tuned!
Behind the thick monastery walls in the courtyard of the former Cistercian abbey, visitors are welcomed by a colorful and educational animal world: trophies, taxidermied animals in naturally designed dioramas, and butterflies await discovery. Created by collector Herbert Schliefsteiner himself, the natural history museum provides insight into the diversity of the animal kingdom.
Birds, mammals, reptiles, and the colorful world of butterflies invite awe, enjoyment, and understanding. Many of the exhibited animals have become rare, so the museum also encourages reflection on our threatened environment.
Prof. Schliefsteiner was not only known as a prominent trophy collector but was also a gifted illustrator and painter. His landscape, animal, and plant illustrations are featured in numerous textbooks and publications.

In 2021, the Natural History Museum Neuberg was handed over by the Schliefsteiner family to the municipality of Neuberg an der Mürz, and subsequently, the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park was entrusted with the operation of the natural history museum.
We received support in implementing the archiving work and training in handling the treasures housed in the Natural History Museum Neuberg from the employees of the Museum Forum Styria. We are truly exceptionally grateful for the active support we received from this side. The colleagues from the Museum Forum Styria have documented their impressions of the extensive collection of Prof. Schliefsteiner in a blog article, which we would like to share: The Ark of Mr. Prof. Schliefsteiner
Through the StAF Project – Styrian Employment Promotion Company, we were able to employ two staff members who passionately and enthusiastically cleaned, documented, and archived all the exhibits of the exhibition in the newly installed display depot. After completing this archiving work, the actual renovation phase began, transforming the Natural History Museum Neuberg into an interactive and modern exhibition experience for young and old, where biodiversity and climate change are made tangible.
