The craft of the tanners has a long tradition in iron ore. The inscription “Anno 900 Ledererhaus” gives an indication of the time of its construction, which is documented in 1548. The exhibition exhibits original, working tanning machines from the 1930s, which make the production of leather transparent. The waterwheel, which has been put into operation again, plays a special role, at the time for leather production and today for electricity generation.“Das Gerberhaus” has been named after the last Gerber dynasty since 1840. The tannery of Salzer fell to the municipality of Eisenerz in 1984. In 2004, the property was donated to the newly founded “Verein Gerberei Salzer zur Revitalisierung des Objektes” under Herbert Krump.Over the past 16 years, the cultural monument has been rescued and set up as a tannery museum. In 2015, the state of Styria awarded the tannery Salzer with the title “Styrian landmark. ”
