Advent season in the ERZBERG LEOBEN region

Erzberg with its unique pyramid shape has left its mark on the region in many ways over the course of the years. Nowadays, the mountain’s ore is mined using modern methods, but time-honoured traditions are still as cherished as they were in the days of traditional mining.

A beautiful example of this is the Advent season in ERZBERG LEOBEN. Long-standing mining traditions bring Advent celebrations of a very special kind to the towns in the region. The events focus on the traditional celebrations of the miners. These include, in particular, the St. Barbara's Day celebrations on the day of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, as well as the marches and musical events that recall the miners' traditions.

Mining customs have also left their mark on the Christmas markets in the entire region around Erzberg. Visitors are offered a varied and atmospheric programme of events: Traditional rites and customs such as the Ledersprung and the Mettenschicht allow guests to immerse themselves in the mining history of the region.

The highlight is the Barbara celebration – a festival in honour of the miners – complemented by the unique taste of Barbara beer.

Advent in Leoben

An atmospheric ambience, the scent of cinnamon and roasted almonds as well as unique arts and crafts: All this awaits visitors to Leoben's main square in the run-up to Christmas. Wooden booths decorated for Christmas invite you to marvel at and buy a diverse, high-quality range of products. It will be hard to resist the temptation of filling your bags with lovingly crafted pottery, artistic handicrafts, and other unique items.

By the way: Another great opportunity to shop for treats is the local farmers' market at Leoben’s church square, which takes place every Tuesday and Friday.

Advent in Eisenerz

In Eisenerz, too, the traditional celebrations around the miners’ customs take place alongside other atmospheric events throughout the Advent season. The following highlights create a very special Christmas atmosphere in Eisenerz:

musical performances by children,
an Advent market at Troatkastn, and
the Advent calendar, the doors of which are individual windows of the town’s houses.
