More information
The starting point of this tour is at the parking lot of the Billa supermarket in St. Peter Freienstein.
The starting point of this tour is at the parking lot of the Billa supermarket in St. Peter Freienstein and leads after crossing the railroad line through the Schörglhofsiedlung near the wire rolling mill of VÖEST-Alpine to Neuwerk in Donawitz. It now goes back over the railroad and after the traffic circle at the former "Fröschlwirt" straight ahead into the Tollinggraben. First you pass the Tollinghof estate on a slightly ascending gravel road - a former weir, which unfortunately cannot be visited, before the path turns to the right and climbs steadily to 860 meters. You can enjoy great views of Donawitz, the steel mill and the lowlands before you reach the plain with the Buschenschank Apfelmaier as a welcome refreshment stop. Here you will find the Marien and Barbarakapelle chapels, which bear witness to the mining history of the area, and after a short, steep climb you reach the high plateau with scattered farms, pastures and a magnificent panoramic view. The descent to the small Tollinggraben and to St. Peter Fr. is now on a good gravel road in the forest and, after passing the Freienstein castle complex, you return to the starting point.
The route is 2% on the main paved road and 98% on secondary roads. The nature of these roads and paths is divided into 16% asphalt and 84% gravel.
