About the region
Framed by the foothills of the Eastern Alps, St. Michael lies at 596 m above sea level in the heart of Upper Styria at the mouth of the Liesing into the Mur. The municipality covers an area of 56 km² and consists of the districts of Brunn, Greith, Liesingtal, Vorderlainsach, Hinterlainsach, Jassing and St. Michael itself. Already Celts and Illyrians, later the Romans settled the area around St. Michael, as numerous finds prove. In the 19th century, iron production in particular was of great importance.
In addition to a wide range of sports and leisure activities and the direct connection to the Mur Cycle Path and the Rastland Cycle Path, St. Michael is the optimal starting point for exploring the cultural and scenic sights of Styria.
