Tremmelberg "Tower in the mountains" via Wolfsgrube

A hike for all those who like to choose the direct and steeper way. Via a dilapidated wolf pit and the former church tower cross you come to the "tower in the mountains".
The goal of the hike is the 42 m high observation tower "Turm im Gebirge" (turnstile for ascent: 2 € fee, winter closure from November to March). One of the most popular hikes in the region convinces with a wonderful view of the Judenburg-Knittelfeld basin and the surrounding mountains. A radio tower already stood on this spot in the 1950s. In 1999, the "new" tower was completed and, as a wooden structure, was modeled after the Seckau "cathedral in the mountains". The structure is a total of 42 m high, with the top viewing platform at 36 m and can be reached via 202 steps. But not only the lookout tower, but also the Wolfsgrube and the Knittelfeld church cross, which is only a few meters away, are interesting to look at during this hike. The wolf pit is a relic of past centuries, where pits were used to trap wolves. The wolf was attracted by a meat bait placed on a thin layer of brushwood so that the pit was covered. The pit was usually lined with stones and was three to four meters deep. Near the wolf pit is the church cross that stood on the temporary monopitch roof of the Knittelfeld parish church from 1992 to 1999.

More information

From St. Michael in Upper Styria via the Murtal expressway S36 (subject to toll sticker) to the exit "Knittelfeld-West"; continue via Sachendorf (direction Gaal) to the clearly visible parking lot at the end of the village (27 km, approx. 20 minutes).

From Judenburg via the Murtal expressway S36 (vignette required) to the exit "Knittelfeld-West"; continue as above. (19 km, approx. 20 minutes).

At the Sachendorf parking lot (1), 697 m, we follow the asphalt road, past the meadows and fields, slightly uphill. After a few minutes we reach a few houses and come to the intersection (2), 715 m, of the hiking trails "Temmelberg via Wolfsgrube" and "Tremmelberg via Vorder-Tremmel". We keep to the right or straight ahead and follow the signs "Temmelberg via Wolfsgrube". A short stretch along the forest road and we see a turnoff to the left. There is a steeper part of the path. We follow the path, cross a small wooden bridge and reach a forest road or a crossroads. Here there is the possibility to go right to the forest school. We go to the left, still a bit along the forest road, and further along paths, continuously uphill, in between traveling on pronounced hollow paths. After crossing the first forest road, follow the markings straight on and you will come to a steeper section of trail and again to a forest road. Continue along a steep path, which has been made easily passable with steps and a fence. At the end of the steps you have a wonderful view (3), 1014 m, of Knittelfeld. From now on it goes on a little more comfortably. Arriving at the ridge, we can already see our destination ahead of us. A few more meters uphill and we reach the Wolfsgrube (4), 1125 m, where a detour to the left leads to the Knittelfeld Kirchturmkreuz. It is not far to the towers, a few more meters of altitude and we reach the Tremmelberg (5), 1194 m. The way back is the same as the ascent. Even though the path leads exclusively through the forest, during the ascent you have beautiful views of Knittelfeld and the surrounding area again and again.
A less steep descent alternative runs via the Vorder-Tremmel (see Tremmelberg hike via Vorder-Tremmel).

Entrance towers through a turnstile (2-euro coin)

The starting point in Sachendorf is easy to reach by bus (bus stop "Sachendorf Abzw Maßweg", from there 15 minutes walk). The nearest train station is in Knittelfeld.
