Wallfahrtskirche Maria Altötting in Winklern

Oberwölz-Lachtal

The Maria Altötting chapel in Winklern, located in an elevated position on the so-called Lindenbichl at the confluence of the Hintereggertal into the Wölzertal, is a so-called Altöttinger chapel located in Winklern near Oberwölz, today a district of Oberwölz in the Murau district in Styria.

Like the model in Altötting, their replica in Oberwölz also consists of a conical roof-shaped rotunda, which is inscribed inside an octagon with segmental arched wall niches and on the north side (the church is oriented to the south) a simple square hall with a slim, baroque hall in front A tower crowned with a helmet adjoins it. To the east of the rotunda is a sacristy extension with an oratory above for the clergy. The rotunda has a dome, the nave is covered with a segment barrel.

In the immediate vicinity of the later founding of the church, the Admont Abbey in Mainhardsdorf owned a Zehenthof, today's "Paterschlössel". Its administrator, Thomas Langanger, had acquired the site from Wolf von Stubenberg in 1652, including a keep from the Frauenburg regional court, and made a pilgrimage to Bavaria with the carpenter Matthias Mehl to visit the Gnadenkapelle as the intended model for his chapel building. It is reported that he carried a copy of the Altötting miraculous image, a Mother of God, carved by the sculptor Georg Remele on his back to the Bavarian pilgrimage site, in order to make it healing there through contact with the original. Until the inauguration of the chapel in 1654, the Madonna stood in the parish church of Oberwölz. It was transferred to Winklern in a solemn procession.

On November 20, 1676, Langanger finally transferred with the donation of the Altötting chapel on the Lindenbühel, which he had built (to Lint and Pichl very next to Winklern against Oberwölz) ... including the keep, bailiwick and patronage rights “Under Abbot Adalbert Heuffler von Rasen und Hohenbühel to the Admont Abbey. The pilgrimage site "Mariae Heimsuchung" has been called Altötting from the start, especially since the chancel with the dome was built and furnished based on the model of the Chapel of Grace at the famous Bavarian pilgrimage site. The chapel shows - like the one in Altötting - a circular choir extended by seven niches. It was finally furnished in the 18th century, after the enlargement and the building of the tower in 1741 ... by Josef Thaddäus Stammel, Joseph Adam von Mölck and Johann Lederwasch, whereby The works of Remele have been replaced by those of Stammel. The Remele high altar with statues of St. Joachim and St. Josef came to the Niederwölz parish church, but is no longer there.
