Etappe 1 Mariazeller Gründerweg
The Mariazell pilgrimage route leads from St. Lambrecht Abbey in Murau, through parts of the Murtal and the region Erzberg Leoben to Mariazell in the Hochsteiermark. 7 stages with a total of around 192 kilometres on footpaths allow you to discover devotional places of power in the green heart of Styria. In the opposite direction from Mariazell to St. Lambrecht, the trail is part of the famous Romea Strata, which leads to Rome.
In 1157, the abbot of St. Lambrecht Abbey sent Brother Magnus out with a statue of the Virgin Mary to provide pastoral care. An insurmountable rock blocked his path, whereupon it split and cleared the way. Magnus placed the statue (which was carved from St. Lambrecht lime wood) on a tree stump and erected a “cell” (monk's dwelling). Since then, this place has been called Mariazell.
