Franz-Scheikl-Climbing Trail

Breitenau am Hochlantsch

The Franz Scheikl Climbing Trail is a trail created and maintained by the Naturfreunde Breitenau under the long-standing chairman Franz Scheikl. The secured climbing trail leads to the Hochlantsch, the highest elevation in the Grazer Bergland with 1,722 meters altitude. From the summit you have a great view.

The climb uses gullies and ridges and traverses always slightly ascending to the summit. The most difficult parts are rated C/D, whereby the difficult exit ridge can be bypassed in an easier variant. After the complete renovation in July 2017, the via ferrata can now also be walked by sporty families.

The nature around the Hochlantsch is also diverse. Strictly protected alpine flowers bloom here, such as the alpine rose, the auricula, the gentian or the cabbage rose, a rare orchid species. The area around Hochlantsch and Bärenschützklamm in particular is also known for the impressive ibexes that live here. The ibexes, like the chamois, are real climbing artists. An encounter with them is a real nature experience.

On the way down, you can take a break at the "Steirischer Jockl", which is widely known for its cuisine. The further way down to Breitenau then leads past the picturesque pilgrimage church "Schüsserlbrunn", which was built directly on the Lantschmauer.
