Arcadia meeting place - The longing for dreamland
An alternative world to harsh reality, an idyll in which man finds everything he needs in nature to live in harmony and enjoy himself with poetry and art - this is how Arcadia has been described and sung about since the Renaissance. In music, Arcadia has been evoked as the home of shepherds, nymphs and dryads in countless vocal and instrumental works. The summer residences of princes and kings in particular offered the nobility of Europe an annual opportunity to enjoy nature and art in equal measure at parties in magnificent gardens. At the 30th Days of Early Music, let's go in search of traces of Arcadia in the music of the 17th and 18th centuries!
