From the ‘Valley of the Kings’ ...the club on the border
Exhibition period 14 March - 1 June 2025
Wednesday to Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm
Curator: Michaela Leutzendorff Pakesch
At the beginning of the 1970s, a group of artist friends settled in southern Burgenland and south-east Styria around Jennersdorf/St. Martin. Each of them has found an ideal, independent working and living space there, but there have also been many joint projects and mutual inspiration in thought and action.
A community developed around Walter Pichler, Christian Ludwig Attersee, Kurt Kocherscheidt, Elfie Semotan, Erwin Bohatsch, Walter Schmögner and later Martin Kippenberger, which even culminated in a joint club with exhibitions and a restaurant.
The exhibition uses exemplary works of art and photographic documents in an attempt to survey this neighbourhood with the help of artistic achievements. Some of the sculptures on display were created together or in response to each other, and the paintings also relate to each other and to the place where they were created. In this way, a field of dialogue unfolds between the various protagonists, a dialogue that is still ongoing, because art is never created in isolation from its surroundings, it always relates to each other and engages in dialogue with what has gone before.
