Interesting facts about BMX BMX is the abbreviation for Bicycle MotoCross. The X stands on the one hand for the English word cross, and on the other for the verb to cross, which means to ride through/cross. .

BMX is a sport that emerged in the USA at the end of the 1960s and allows athletes to perform a variety of tricks and stunts on a 20″ bike (20-inch wheels). In its original form, like motocross, the aim was to race head-to-head against seven opponents on a 400-metre-long sand course with jumps and banked turns. BMX bikes were very fashionable among children and young people in the early 1980s. BMX racing probably started all over the world, where children and teenagers raced off-road on their bikes, jumped over hills and tried to do the same as motocross riders on their motorcycles. The first tracks were probably built in California in the early seventies and BMX racing has continued to develop from its beginnings to the present day. The tracks have become more challenging with larger and technically more difficult obstacles, concreted bends and starting hills and even floodlights and grandstands. BMX racing, the original discipline, has been an Olympic event since 2008. In mid-2003, the Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to hold two BMX competitions at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The BMX tracks are categorized: There are three types, A, B and C tracks. A track has a minimum length of 300m and may not exceed the maximum length of 400m, and at least 3 bends are required. The number and type of obstacles is left to each track designer. In any case, it must be ensured that all age groups can ride the obstacles safely. Every BMX track begins with a starting hill on which the starting gate is installed. The riders line up behind it, the starting procedure is triggered electronically by a traffic light signal and the gate falls forward. Now it's just a matter of mastering the obstacles and bends.
