Großsteinbach is the only region in Styria that is home to the chess flower
At flowering time around Easter, thousands of chess flower heads turn the meadows into a dark red sea of flowers.
However, this coloring of the meadows lasts only one to two weeks. After that, the plant disappears into the green of the newly sprouting meadow grasses. None of the hanging flower bells resembles the other.
On the single flower, which shows various color variations from deep purple to light brown-pink, you can recognize an individual checkerboard-like mottling, which gave the protected plant its name.
