Church Tabor

Weiz

In view of the Turkish invasions, a fortified tabor with a gate, round towers, curtain wall and moat was built around the church in the 16th century. At the end of the 17th century, the weir system was removed and a residential building was built instead. In the inner courtyard of the Tabor, on the south side of the church, there are impressive evidence of Roman settlement on Weizer soil. The late antique tombstones date from the 1st - 2nd centuries.

The interior of the church surprises with partly well-preserved Romanesque and Gothic frescoes - episodes from the story of creation, the passion of Christ and the story of Mary. Lost parts of the fresco were added in 1933 by the Weiz artist Fritz Silberbauer, and existing ones restored. The baroque high altar draws the viewer's gaze to the altarpiece painted by J. A. Ritter von Mölck in 1771. It shows the oldest surviving view of the Weiz market.
