The area of the municipality of St. Johann in der Haide covers an area of 23.56 km². The community was created in 1969 through the merger of the three communities of Schölbing-Altenberg, St. Johann in der Haide and Unterlungitz, which still bring their specific characteristics into the life of the community as cadastral communities.
The towns in the municipality are all located at an altitude of 350-420m in the wide valleys and on the lush hills between the Lafnitztal in the east, the Lungitztal in the middle of the municipality and the Safental in the west (highest point: 445 near Mitterberg) . The eastern border of the municipality is formed by the Lafnitz, which flows naturally at this point and also serves as the state border with Burgenland.
Together with the Ghart-forest, which stretches along the entire eastern edge of the municipality, it has formed one of the oldest natural border areas in Europe for thousands of years.
