Vorau Abbey

Vorau

The Augustinian canons' monastery in Vorau has been a pastoral, cultural and spiritual center in northern Eastern Styria since 1163. Behind the beautiful facades of the main building, you can admire a colorful world of paintings and lots of gold in the baroque church interior. In the sacristy, J. C. Hackhofer left a fresco depicting heaven and hell at the beginning of the 18th century. The rococo-style library houses many books that bear witness to the importance of the religious orders for the culture and history of knowledge in Europe over many centuries. The manuscripts include, for example, the “Vorau Imperial Chronicle” and the “Vorau Folk Bible”, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The baroque collegiate church is open to the public during the day.

The gate is closed on the following days and there are no guided tours:
December 24, in the afternoon
December 25 and 26, all day
