While suddenly appearing in spring, swallowing park benches and small bridges, the lake offers a variety of shades of green before oozing away in the course of autumn and finally drying up during the winter months... what a spectacular change of seasons!

With the onset of the snowmelt on the mountains, the lake fills with crystal clear spring water up to a maximum of 10m. The height of the water level depends on the amount of precipitation and snow produced during winter. Come spring the breathtaking lake shows its most beautiful side until the month of July and August. Exploring the lake and its surroundings during this time of year means you will discover sunken hiking trails, wooden bridges and benches. When the leaves fall and the the air is fresh and crisp, the Grüne See starts to ooze away until it is completely dried up during the winter months. Now visitors may stroll at the bottom of the lake, admire the breathtaking mountain panorama or circle the lake on on of the two cross country skiing tracks around the lake.
A paradise for nature lovers
The Grüner See is home to the municipality of Tragöß - Sankt Katharein, where guests can enjoy the fresh air, tranquillity and picturesque Alpine meadows. The beautiful surroundings here are best enjoyed during outdoor activities, such as hikes along the Kamplsteig trail, to the Edelweißboden or into the Marienklamm gorge. All these hikes are linked by a unique flora that blossoms anew here every year.
Culinary delights at the Green Lake
A stop at one of the inns and taverns adds culinary delights to your exploration tours. Nature lovers can savour genuine Styrian delicacies in front of magnificent backdrops such as the Hochschwab massif. Attention pleasure hikers: The catering establishments are starting points for numerous other hikes in the region.
Travelling to the Green Lake
The Green Lake is a special treasure, located in a completely unspoilt natural setting. An environmentally friendly journey to this picturesque place is possible by public transport. The RegioBus Steiermark 175 takes passengers from Bruck an der Mur directly to Tragöß.
Please note: Bus connections at weekends are only guaranteed during the hiking season from May to October. If travelling by car, there are two paid car parks to choose from:
- Grüner See car park
- Jassing car park
The parking fee is 6.00 euros for one day. A season ticket is available for 60.00 euros.Payment is made directly at the tourist office at the ‘Grüner See’ car park.Camping and overnight stays are not permitted in the car parks.
