In the summer of 2024, the Grottenhof Agricultural School in Graz will transform into a unique open-air stage for Gaetano Donizetti's opera The Elixir of Love. Directed by Wolfgang Atzenhofer and produced by the musical theater association Das Opernkarussell, this playful tale of the peasant Nemorino, who is desperately in love with the landowner Adina, comes to life in an imaginative way. The opera, full of love, jealousy, and misunderstandings, is further complicated by the antics of the quack doctor Dulcamara, who sells Nemorino a simple red wine as a magical love potion.
This production at Grottenhof stands out for its unusual setting: the audience is seated between bales of straw, becoming part of the performance. The unique atmosphere combines the opera’s storyline with elements from the TV show Farmer Wants a Wife and a young farmers' calendar, presented by the Styrian Rural Youth. The music is complemented by a large project choir made up of participants from across Styria and a brass band arranged by Wolfgang Kornberger and Rainer Pötz.
The performance will take place on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 5:00 PM. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors to the school's gymnasium. Tickets are available in advance, priced at €15 for youths and €25 for adults, with a 10% discount for Steiermärkische Sparkasse customers. Tickets at the door are €19 and €29, subject to availability.
