GRAZ Region for weatherproofs
The sun always shines in Graz! Of course, that’s not entirely true. What’s true, though, is that the weather gods mostly smile upon the provincial capital of Styria. After all, there’s a reason why the city is known for its southern flair.
Nevertheless, even in the Graz Region it can happen that the weather is not so friendly. Then the varied alternative programme is in demand, which makes the region exciting even on rainy days.
For example, you don't have to miss out on a city stroll in Graz even when it's raining. After all, there is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes. Plus, the region also offers plenty of indoor options for stay-inside weather.
So close to heaven!
Churches and monasteries
Connected to history and so close to heaven are the numerous churches and monasteries in the region of Graz.
At Rein Abbey, the oldest Cistercian monastery in the world, you can take a look behind the monastery walls and visit the baroque basilica and the library of the abbey.
With its cosy inn, parsonage, prelate’s house and the distinctive Pilgrimage church of Maria Straßengel, the Kirchberg in Gratwein-Straßengel is a heavenly place. The church is one of Austria’s most prestigious High Gothic sacral buildings and is also affectionately called “Styria’s Steffl” (referring to Vienna’s famous St. Stephen’s Cathedral).
A different kind of church: The inside of Thal’s Parish Church explodes with colour. The masterpiece designed by renowned Austrian artist Ernst Fuchs is full of mythical symbols.
With its baroque high altar, miraculous image of the Virgin Mary, its treasury and the Antoniuskapelle chapel, the Pilgrimage Church of Maria Lankowitz is the not-so-hidden gem of Styria’s second largest pilgrimage site. Sacred silence fills the church and monastery at Holy Mountain in Bärnbach. A power place that hasn’t lost any of its appeal or energy over the years.
