Women to power! This call echoes as loudly through the land today as it did in the ancient Athens of the poet Aristophanes.

In the comedy ‘Women's Assembly’ by Aristophanes (390 BC), the women decide to take over power in the state because the men are corrupt and politically incapable. As they have no voting rights, they disguise themselves as men and smuggle themselves into the People's Assembly. They decide on a general division of property, i.e. everything should belong to everyone: Land, household goods, food, women and children. However, as the men do not want to give up their dominance and the women do not show solidarity in some matters, the plan ultimately remains a grey theory...

Little is known about Aristophanes' life; the dates of his birth and death (450 - 388 BC) are imprecise, which makes his literary oeuvre all the richer, in which he often criticises the political and social conditions and grievances of (Athenian) democracy in a comedic manner. The current critical approaches in the play still call for reflection on gender stereotypes and power structures today. Aristophanes thus remains an important part of theatre history and continues to inspire committed artists.
