About the region
Grundlsee – The Styrian Sea in the Ausseerland Salzkammergut
Grundlsee is a natural lake – the largest in Styria – and lends its name to the surrounding municipality. Nestled picturesquely in the Ausseerland Salzkammergut, the municipality of Grundlsee covers an area of about 151 km², sits at 732 meters above sea level, and is home to around 1,200 residents. The unspoiled landscape and the impressive mountain backdrop give the region its distinctive charm. Gentle hills and majestic peaks frame the lake, creating a landscape full of contrast and beauty. Charming villages line the shores of Lake Grundlsee, radiating a sense of peace and tranquility. The warm, reddish wood of the old houses exudes coziness, while historic villas and small castles tell stories of the area’s long-standing tradition as a summer retreat for nobility. This picturesque setting invites visitors to discover new facets again and again and to experience the ever-changing colors and moods of the landscape.
Grundlsee offers a wide range of activities throughout the year. In summer, it becomes a popular bathing lake with crystal-clear waters, ideal for swimming, sailing, diving, and fishing. A boat ride on Lake Grundlsee with the historic motorboats "Rudolf" and "Traun" is one of the unforgettable highlights of a summer holiday in the region. A particularly fascinating attraction is the Toplitzsee, surrounded by mysterious legends and known for its mystical atmosphere. A traditional wooden boat called a Plätte carries visitors across the Toplitzsee, and from the far shore, a romantic hiking trail leads to the Kammersee, the source of the River Traun. The surrounding area is perfect for hiking, mountaineering, and exploring pristine nature.
In winter, Grundlsee transforms into a magical wonderland. The snow-covered landscape is ideal for ice skating, curling, and sledding. Peaceful winter walks through snow-laden forests offer moments of pure serenity. Local traditions and the wearing of traditional costumes are very much alive and shape the cultural life of the region. Since 2017, Grundlsee has held the official status of a climatic health resort, specializing in natural medicine and complementary therapies. The combination of clean mountain air, a healing climate, and untouched nature makes Grundlsee a true haven for relaxation, clarity, and renewed energy.
Grundlsee is not only a jewel among Styria’s lakes but also a true leisure paradise, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. It is a place where rest and outdoor experiences come together to create an unforgettable holiday in the Ausseerland Salzkammergut.
