The lake is located at an altitude of 1.567 meters in a hollow embedded between Schneiderkogel and Traweng. Fishing is allowed in the Großsee from July 1 to September 15.
With a water surface of 6.2 hectares, it is the second largest lake on the high plateau of the Tauplitzalm. The lake has a length of about 440 meters in a west-east direction with a maximum width of about 190 meters. On the southern shore there is a pumping station for snowmaking and a ski lift. The lake can be circumnavigated on a hiking trail. Dense mats of bracken algae grow to a depth of several meters, with dense stands of pondweed, especially near the shore, the most common being long-leaved pondweed, as well as crested pondweed and intermixed pondweed.
The lake access is free of charge.
