The history of the Kurhaus
The spa town of Bad Aussee in the heart of Austria looks back on a long tradition of health. Today's building, which houses the congress rooms and the spa café, was erected in 1870 as the "Kurhaus" at the beginning of the great building boom of Bad Aussee's burgeoning spa tourism and was later enlarged several times. It was built on the foundation walls of the medieval saltworks, which, as a smoking industrial plant in the middle of the town centre, was incompatible with the new spa concept and therefore moved to the periphery of the town. From the time the Kurhaus was built, there was also a catering facility, initially run purely as a restaurant by various Viennese operators. It was finally the manager of the Viennese café "Fenstergucker", Leopold Steger, who in 1900 switched to the gastronomy type of a Viennese café confectionery, which is still valid today.
The name "Lewandofsky" or "Lewan" came into play in 1910, when Gustav Lewandofsky I moved his Lebzelterei from the old Lebzelterhaus vis-a-vis to the Kurhaus, thus giving the Kurhaus café the name and reputation that made it famous throughout Austria for its café culture and products.
With the new operators, Charly Temmel and his brother Willi, the pastry specialities, the famous Temmel ice cream from Graz and Los Angeles, this great café tradition will write Austrian history anew as "Lewandofsky-Temmel".
