Tauplitz Circular Trail

We invite you to enjoy a beautiful circular hike in Tauplitz. Along the way, you’ll cross charming streams, relax in the peaceful forest, discover spectacular photo spots at a roaring waterfall, and experience tranquil moments by the still waters of the Sagtümpel.

In total, you’ll explore 10 stations, all clearly marked with information boards, ensuring you won’t miss a single highlight.

For those looking for a bit more adventure, we offer an extended circular hike to the Lieglloch – a cave with an impressive viewpoint, which can be reached via the “Neff” farm (approx. 2 hours). The ascent or descent can also be made easier by using the 4-seater chairlift (mid-station).

In addition to delicious local cuisine, the spacious terrace of the Pfannerhütte offers stunning panoramic views of Tauplitz and the mighty Grimming mountain.

1 Start at the village square

Let’s go!

Your adventure begins right in the heart of Tauplitz, at the village square. Here, you’ll find a large information board with everything you need to know about the Tauplitz Circular Trail.

For more details about Tauplitz and the surrounding region, feel free to stop by the tourist office just across the square. The team will be happy to assist you and looks forward to your visit.

2 Parking area – Small Chapel

Large Information Board

At the large parking area next to the bypass road – which also serves skiers in winter – you’ll find an information board displaying all the stations of the Tauplitz Circular Trail.

If you’re arriving from outside and prefer not to start at the village square, this is a great alternative starting point. You can park your car here, begin your hike, and end your tour with a peaceful rest at the small chapel.

3 Grimming Viewpoint

The Grimming...

...is an isolated limestone massif that belongs to the Dachstein range. Standing tall at 2,351 meters, it rises like a colossal giant. Before precise surveying methods were developed, people long believed it to be the highest mountain in Styria.

The Grimming stretches about 9 km in a northeast-southwest direction and spans approximately 4 km in width.

4 Leinsteg – Forest Bathing

The Forest and Me: Shinrin Yoku!

Experts have discovered that this Japanese form of therapy has positive effects on inner calm, restful sleep, and the strengthening of the nervous and immune systems.
It’s not about literally bathing in the forest, but rather about fully immersing yourself in its atmosphere.

Take in nature with all your senses and try a few simple mindfulness exercises right by the water.

5 Mühlbachsteg

In Harmony with the Forest

Take a conscious step away from the fast pace of work and everyday life. Slow down—or better yet, rediscover the beauty of slowness.

A wonderful spot for this awaits you just past the Mühlbachsteg, in front of the old power station by the Grimmingbach stream.

This peaceful setting is also ideal for forest bathing or a quiet yoga session in nature.

6 Tauplitz Waterfall

Rushing Waters

Known as the “heart of the forest,” the Tauplitz Waterfall is one of the true highlights of the Tauplitz Circular Trail. With a height of 30 meters, it impresses with its natural power and beauty. The waterfall is located towards the Gnanitz Valley at around 930 meters above sea level.

Benches at the base of the waterfall and at the upper viewpoint invite you to take a relaxing break and capture spectacular photos of this natural wonder.

7 Sagtümpel

The Legend of the Water Man

The Sagtümpel is one of Austria’s rare “vauclusian karst springs” – meaning that the water is pushed upward from a spring basin deep underground. Its catchment area mainly includes the plateau of the Tauplitzalm.

Beyond its geological uniqueness, the Sagtümpel is also the setting of a local folk tale involving a mysterious water man – a mythical creature said to dwell in its depths. Let your imagination wander as you enjoy the quiet magic of this legendary place.

Sporty & Paradise-like

The cross-country ski trails are perfect for picking up speed while enjoying nature. With the majestic Grimming in sight, you’ll glide along the gently rolling 6.5 km Freiberg Trail, surrounded by stunning alpine scenery.

A LIEGLLOCH

Where the Wild Things Were

The Lieglloch cave was once full of life – quite literally. In this mysterious cave high above the Tauplitz valley, Stone Age relics were discovered, including the bones of ancient bears.

Even from a distance, the impressive entrance portal — 15 meters wide and 10 meters high — is a sight to behold.

Today, the cave is also a popular destination for its breathtaking views of the Grimming, Gwendling, and Hechlstein peaks.
