Ruin Pflindsberg

Altaussee

Viewing and happiness place with magical view over the Ausseerland.

Pflindsberg is the castle of the evil bishop Philip of Sponheim (1220-1279), he was a colorful personality. Although chosen as Archbishop of Salzburg, he persistently refused to receive the spiritual dignities. In 1246 he had the Aussee area occupied by force of arms.

In 1395 the castle was the seat of the care office, later a prison for "malefic persons", which was understood to mean murderers, for example. According to legend, the soul of an innocent prisoner who died in the tower still haunts the castle lawn as a black rider.

The complex fell into disrepair around 1780.

A lookout tower was built next to the remaining castle walls, with a view of Altaussee, Bad Aussee, and the surrounding mountains.
