Gscheideggkogel
A beautiful - endurance demanding - snowshoe hike in the Eisenerz Alps with a view of the "Styrian Matterhorn".
The Radmer or Johnsbach Valley forms the natural border between the Eisenerz Alps in the south and the Gesäuse Mountains in the north. The Radmer is an old mining area and consists of the villages Radmer an der Stube and Radmer an der Hasel, also called Hinterradmer, which lies further in the valley. Because of the wonderful, extensive, untouched mountain scenery and the many touring possibilities, this area is often visited by hikers in summer and by numerous ski tourers and snowshoe hikers in winter. The snowshoe tour to the Gscheideggkogel, 1788 m, starts in Radmer an der Hasel and is suitable for persevering snowshoe hikers with good physical condition with about 900 meters of altitude and a trail distance of about 15 km.

From Trofaich via the B115 to Radmer an der Stube and on to the parking lot (48 km, approx. 55 minutes).
From Trieben an der Pyhrn Autobahn A9 via Admont (L713) to Radmer an der Stube (B146) and on to the parking lot (55 km, approx. 65 minutes)
By car for snowshoeing - a few things to look out for!
- Good winter tires are an absolute MUST!
- Ice scraper, snow broom, de-icer for the door locks and a small shovel belong to the basic equipment.
- Put snow chains and a tow rope in the car, even if you are not good with them yourself. Helping and knowledgeable hikers are always available on the mountain!
- Clear the car completely of snow and ice, especially sweep off the roof of the car completely.
- When parking, make sure you leave room for other motorists.
- Always park so that the rest of the roadway remains clear for cars, logging trucks, and snow removal vehicles.
- Find out about the snow situation on the access road or parking facilities before setting off. (hut host, webcams)
After the start at the parking lot Hinterradmer (1), 993 m, we follow the wooden signs in the direction of Schafböden along the Haselbach stream to the first crossroads. There, after crossing a small stream on the right, we go comfortably uphill in serpentines to the junction Schafbödenalm - Neuburgeralm, 1255m. Now we follow the forest road on the left, then the ascent tracks of the ski tourers up to the Schafbödenalm (2), 1583m. Here we already have free alpine pastures in front of us and enjoy the view. We continue - again following the ski touring ascent tracks - in a northerly direction to the ridge, where we are rewarded with wonderful views of both our destination, the Gscheideggkogel and the Lugauer (Styrian Matterhorn). Now follows a small counter ascent. To avoid any snow cornices, we keep slightly below the ridge until we reach the Gscheideggkogel (3), 1788m. The descent follows the ascent route with possible shortcuts between the switchbacks.
- In general, all winter tourists in this area should inform themselves about the designated winter resting zones for wildlife and the associated ban on entering the area at the Gesäuse National Park.
- The indicated walking time is to be understood as a guideline, as it depends on the snow conditions, the terrain and the presence of a trail. The individual's physical condition and stamina for strenuous trail work also play an important role. Sometimes the duration of the tour can change considerably due to large amounts of new snow, broken slush, soft sulzing snow, etc.
