Iron has been processed in Thörl for more than 800 years. The "old house" is around 500 years old.The core of the building is late Gothic, today's overall appearance is characterized by a baroque sense of form.
In the 16th century The Thörler factory under Sebold I von Pögel achieved great growth through the manufacture of weapons for Emperor Maximilian I. In 1575 the work was divided into the upper and lower hammer and sold to different owners. The manor house of the lower hammer remained the castle that the Pögels had already lived in as a mansion, while the "old house" was expanded into the residential building of the upper hammer. Until 1877 the “Old House” was the residence of the Pengg trades. The "old house" retained parts of its diverse functions (residential, office and farm buildings) until the middle of the 20th century.
