The Sacred Heart of Mary Carmel in Mariazell, Karmelweg 1, was built in 1956 through donations from the Austrian people. In the same year the first sisters moved into the new convent building.
The settlement happened on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of Mariazell in 1957. The Carmel monastery is located about 2 km from the basilica (about 20 minutes walk).
"To contemplate the law of the Lord day and night and to grow in it".
Under this motto, we Carmelite nuns dedicate ourselves to a life marked by prayer, meditation and manual tasks. When Mariazell celebrated its 800th anniversary in 1957, the dedication of our Carmel also took place. It was to be a jubilee gift of the Austrian people to the Magna Mater Austriae.
According to the wishes of St. Teresa of Avila, the reformer of our Order, the Carmelite way of life is purely contemplative, that is, the vocation to Carmel is a vocation to prayer. Teresa defines this as "staying with a friend with whom we often and gladly come together alone, because we know that he loves us. We bring all the great concerns of the Church and the world and of many people before God in prayer and thus participate in the sorrows and sufferings of our time.
But we are also committed to work. We run a host bakery and provide the church linen for the pilgrimage basilica. Decorated candles and straw stars are made by the sisters and sold at our gate. Thus, each sister contributes to the livelihood of the community through her work in the house and garden.
