A side trip to the Marienwasserfall in the Grünau should not be missing on any visit to Mariazell!
A few minutes walk behind the former hotel "Marienwasserfall" in the Grünau (now there is only a wayside shrine from the hotel) falls a waterfall over a steep rock face.
The original statue of the Virgin Mary, which was behind the waterfall, no longer exists, so a new statue of the Virgin Mary was made and installed (see also report in the Mariazellerland Blog).
This bronze casting is a replica of the Gußwerk Madonna. The original of the Gußwerk Madonna is made of iron and can be seen in the Montanmuseum Gußwerk. The waterfall flows into the Salza after a few kilometers.
The waterfall is freely accessible - in winter the path is not cleared - walk at your own risk!
