By car, drive through Altenberg an der Rax towards Nass until the paved road ends, where you will find parking on the right. The hike begins along a forest road. Follow the signs towards Nasskamm/Schneealm until you reach a trail junction. Here, you can turn right towards Rax, or continue left towards Schneealm.
After a comfortable ascent, you will reach a junction leading towards Karl Alm. Although this adds a little to the hike, the trail is a more gradual ascent to Ameisbühel.
On the final stretch, the trail returns to Nasskamm, and you will soon see the Lurgbauerhütte ahead. From there, it is only a few more meters to the summit cross on Schauerwand, where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains and the Schneealm plateau.
The return trail passes by the Lurgbauerhütte again, heading back towards Nasskamm. This time, we will not take the path through Karl Alm but stay on Nasskamm. Surefootedness is beneficial here. The trail then leads back down to the parking lot.
Once you reach the summit, a refreshing stop at the Lurgbauerhütte is highly recommended – Austria's easternmost organic alpine dairy.
