Hike over Sepplgraben to the Rax in the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park.

An alpine alternative to the secured Reißtalersteig, ideal for combining with a circular tour over Heukuppe, the Karl Ludwig Haus, and Waxriegelhaus. The approach is also possible from Gasthof Moassa.

This tour requires surefootedness (no protections) and is particularly suitable in spring as an ideal training tour for combined hikes in higher mountain ranges.

The route begins on the yellow-marked lower Reißtalersteig or, from Gasthof Moassa, the lower Fuchslochsteig, leading to the base of the Raxenmäuer cliffs. Here, the entry point to Sepplgraben is located slightly left (when facing the base of the cliffs) of the secured Reißtalersteig.

The path follows the Sepplgraben gully, ascending in a direct line to the Rax high plateau, then veers slightly left to reach the 2,007m high Heukuppe.

From there, follow the markings down to the Karl Ludwig Haus, and then return via the Schlangenweg to the parking lot.

For the route starting at Gasthof Moassa, it's ideal to descend from the Karl Ludwig Haus via the secured Gretchensteig (A) and then hike back to the starting point.

Access to Gasthof Moassa is not possible from Monday to Wednesday. The approach is via the lower Reißtalersteig, and therefore, parking is available at Preiner Gscheid.

From the parking lot at Preiner Gscheid, the route initially follows the yellow-marked lower Reißtalersteig, passing the unstaffed Reißtalerhütte, until reaching the base of the Raxenmäuer cliffs (about 90 minutes from the parking lot).

From the start of the secured upper Reißtalersteig, follow the base of the cliffs left until you reach the beginning of the distinctive Sepplgraben (5 minutes from the Reißtalersteig start). This gully is often snow-filled until May, so crampons and an ice axe are recommended.

Climb the gully directly to the high plateau and continue toward Heukuppe (orientation on the plateau can be difficult in fog).

From Heukuppe, follow the staked markings heading east down to Karl Ludwig Haus, and then take the Schlangenweg back to the starting point.

For those starting at Gasthof Moassa, the route initially follows the old ski slope and a forest road to Karreralm, then continues on the lower Fuchslochsteig to the base of the cliffs. Follow the cliff base, passing the entrance to the Fuchsloch, until just before the start of the secured Reißtalersteig. Continue as described above.

For the return, it’s ideal to descend via the secured Gretchensteig and the westward crossing path back to Gasthof Moassa.

In addition to the Sepplgraben, the Raxenmäuer offers a variety of other shorter and unsecured ascents in the 1st and 2nd difficulty levels, such as Kleines Fuchsloch, Amaliensteig, Karreralmgrat, Cäciliensteig, and Wildkogelsteig.
