Kampalpe
The hike starts either from the Spital am Semmering train station or from Parking Lot 1 of the Stuhleck ski lifts. From there, we ascend comfortably to the Bärenwand, where the Probststeig begins. This is a very narrow and, at times, surprisingly exposed and steep trail through beautiful forest, which is generally well-maintained. However, surefootedness and a head for heights are essential. This trail is not suitable for small children.
After about 730 meters of elevation and 1.45 hours, the summit cross of Kampalpe is reached. It is beautifully located with a fantastic view, near a bench where a rest is highly recommended. However, the highest point of Kampalpe is not at the summit cross. It is about 100 meters further west along the path, marked by a survey marker, and offers less scenic views. On the way there, you can catch glimpses of Schneeberg, Rax, and Schneealpe.
Soon after the survey marker, you’ll reach the junction for the descent back to Spital am Semmering via the so-called Saurücken. This path starts steep but is much gentler than the Probststeig and quickly turns into well-maintained forest and forest roads. Just before the Franziskabründl, there’s a nice bench offering a wonderful view of Stuhleck and Spital am Semmering, making it an ideal spot for a rest before returning comfortably to the starting point.
