Mitterdorfer Pilgerweg
The hiking trail is divided into three distinct sections: Pilgermeile (in the town center), Pilgerpfad (pilgrimage path), and Pilgerpark (near Schloss Pichl).
Each year, up to 15,000 guests and pilgrims walk the Pilgermeile. The road leads through the town center, where pilgrims on their journey to Mariazell arrive. Along the Pilgermeile, pilgrims and visitors are accompanied by pilgrim sculptures and other sights.
On the Pilgerpfad, in addition to artworks, visitors can enjoy further attractions: the Teichhütte (pond hut) invites for a rest, and the forest play stations are sure to delight children.
Finally, the Pilgerpark, located on the grounds of FAST Pichl, is a place of peace, insight, and meditation. The Mercuriusweg (Mercury Path) runs through the park, with the main attraction being an oversized pilgrim’s chair.

More information
We start our hike in the town center of Mitterdorf. Along the Pilgermeile, we are accompanied by pilgrim sculptures and other landmarks, such as the Franzosenbrunnen (French Fountain). From the Main Square, we continue along Veitscher Straße and turn left at the junction with Hundskopfstraße. Here, we encounter a steeper section of the trail, which leads from Hundskopfstraße into Obere Waldgasse. We follow the marked path further to the idyllic Teichhütte, where we take a well-deserved break.
On Friday and Saturday afternoons, the Teichhütte is open, offering the opportunity to enjoy local products from the farmers of Mitterdorf.
Afterward, the path continues along Schmölzstraße, leading to the cemetery with its Stations of the Cross. After visiting the Stations of the Cross, we proceed along Rittisstraße (R5 bike path) to Schloss Pichl, where the Pilgerpark and Mercuriusweg await. Here, we find peace and can reflect on the art installations before continuing our walk back to the town center.
Stop at the Teichhütte – enjoy culinary delights from the region! The Teichhütte is open on Friday and Saturday afternoons.
Don’t forget the forest play stations along the way, which help the little ones sharpen and train their senses. The various stations are marked with ‘Spürnasen-Tafeln’ (scent trail boards). Each board provides detailed instructions for the game.
Take the train to Mitterdorf station, then take the bus to the town center of Mitterdorf.
