To the Hohe Scheibe in the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park

A solitary forest and meadow hike in the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park in the High Styria region, offering beautiful close-up views of the southern side of the Rax. At the summit of the Hohe Scheibe, you will enjoy a stunning view of the Mürztal valley. Below the summit, the Scheibenhütte, which is operated on weekends, awaits visitors.

A simple yet extensive hike through the expansive forests of the Kampalm-Scheiben mountain ridge. The Styrian side of the Rax accompanies us as a panorama to the north, and from the summit of the Hohe Scheibe, we have a magnificent view of the Mürztal valley and the Fischabcher Alps, with the Stuhleck to the south.

More information

From the parking lot at Preiner Gscheid, we walk about 100 meters along the road on the northeast side until we reach the junction of the hiking trail (stay to the right), which immediately ascends through a dense forest in the southern direction toward Tratenkogel (also known as Drahtekogel). Crossing a few forest roads, the trail, becoming a bit steeper, leads us to the so-called "Blätterwald" (Leaf Forest).

Here, we take a right turn before reaching Tratenkogel and follow a forest road, initially heading west until we reach Schmidlruhe. Soon, keeping to the south, we reach Beeralplstall. By the way, it was here that terrible crimes were committed by the Nazis/SS against war refugees during the final days of the war.

Our route now continues along a forest trail to the Scheibenhütte and the scenic summit of Hohe Scheibe.

For the return, we can either retrace our steps or, at Schmidlruhe, take a left turn and descend into the Raxengraben. We reach the entrance of Koglergraben at Pension Poldi. From here, we either walk about another hour back to Preiner Gscheid or try our luck as hitchhikers.

On the way back, an alternative descent is possible via the Hochmaißhütte (unmanned) into the Rax Valley. Return to Preiner Gscheid can be done by hitchhiking (currently no bus service!).
