Veitschtal Cycling Route R48
From the centre of St. Barbara im Mürztal - Mitterdorf district, the route leads us into the picturesque Veitsch valley, past Pichl Castle (forestry training centre), through the northern settlement area of Mitterdorf into the Veitsch valley. Here the cycle path runs parallel to the main road. Through Groß Veitsch and again alongside the main road to the car park at the Magnesitwerk. Motivated cyclists can continue from Groß Veitsch to the Brunnalm or the Pretalsattel.

We start our cycle tour in the centre of St. Barbara im Mürztal/Mitterdorf and follow the signs to Pichl Castle. Here we cycle past Pichl Castle and turn left at the ‘Rote-Kreuz-Straße’ junction. At the end of ‘Rote-Kreuz-Straße’, we cycle parallel to the main road, accompanied for a large part of the route by the imposing pilgrim cross, which indicates the centre of Veitsch, the village of Veitsch and the Ölberg from afar. We cycle along at a leisurely pace until we reach Dorf Veitsch and then on to Groß Veitsch.
The ‘athletes’ among us now climb the steep section of the Brunnalm road, which leads in serpentines to the Brunnalm. Another sporty option is the ascent from Groß Veitsch via the Pretalgraben to the Pretal Sattel.
The Pichl Castle with its pilgrims‘ park and the pilgrims’ cross on the Veitscher Ölberg are worth seeing along the R48 trail. https://www.pilgerkreuz.at/
If you make it to the Brunnalm, you should stop off at the Pflanzlhütte, the Gams or the Berggasthof Scheikl - the panoramic terraces are the perfect place for a refreshment stop before heading home.
