Fruits of the goddess (Austria, Demeter farm & tastings)

Feistritz

About the offer

Get a glimpse into biodynamic agriculture at the Demeter-certified organic farm “Biohof Schloffer” in Anger. Karl and Lukas Schloffer will show you their family-run farm and explain how everything works. You’ll get a chance to help out, taste what’s grown here and enjoy the family’s anecdotes.

Demeter International (named after the Greek goddess of harvest and fertility) is the oldest certification organisation for organic farming. It has members all around the world who follow the Demeter principles of cultivation. Biodynamic products are the result of consistent and caring labour, knowledge and convictions.

The principles of biodynamic cultivation are known as the strictest and most comprehensive ones in the world. They’re based on Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophical world view and ideas for “living agriculture”. Approximately 120,000 ha worldwide are cultivated following the Demeter principles, among them “Biohof Schloffer”.

The duration of this interesting biodynamic Slow Trips experience is approximately 2 hours:

  • We’ll start at the family’s show orchard; the meeting point is the Apple Pavilion.
  • To begin, you’ll get a chance to taste test an exceptional apple variety. Don’t worry if you’re allergic to apples: this variety is perfectly safe for those with apple allergies. Of course, you’ll be able to sample plenty of other fresh fruits at the show orchard as well.
  • Our Demeter experts Lukas and Karl will tell you more about Eastern Styria and why the region is the birthplace of Styrian orcharding tradition. You’ll get insights into daily life at “Biohof Schloffer” and will learn more about biodynamic agriculture. As you listen, you’ll get the opportunity to pick and taste your way through the orchard.
  • Time for some hands-on experience: Have you ever mixed your own horn manure preparation? You’ll learn what buried cow horns have to do with all this, how this preparation is used on the soil and how to do it yourself.
  • Next is a small tour around the farm and the presentation of other biodynamic preparations. Tastings of various organic products, such as juices, cider, jams, chutneys and dried fruits, are included.

2 - 10 participants

  • various fruit tastings from Demeter
  • guided tour and insights into biodynamic agriculture

we will meet at the apple pavillon

Please, don’t bring any pets — horn manure should remain the only fertiliser used on our orchards. ;-)

This offer is aimed at people over 16. Of course, you can also bring children along, and they can have a bit of a nibble in the orchard. People with disabilities are more than welcome at the farm. But depending on the weather, participation possibilities might be limited. If the weather is bad, the soil in the orchard can become difficult to navigate with wheelchairs.
