Jägersteig & Patschaberg, Weizklamm gorge

The Jägersteig trail in the Weizklamm gorge is highly spectacular, but makes demands on hikers. The Patscha is then easy to walk, with wonderful views of Eastern Styria.
The Weizbach stream has carved a deep gorge through the limestone cliffs of the Weizer Bergland. The vertical gorge walls can be admired in the winding Weizklamm gorge. From the "Jägersteig", which runs high above the gorge in gentle ups and downs along the steep rock face, you can see the gorge from a new perspective. The trail was created by hunters to reach the game that was shot from the Patschnase or Predigtstuhl at the top. Today, the striking rock faces are also a popular climbing destination, and the "Jägersteig" with its suspension bridge and rock tunnel also requires surefootedness and a head for heights, although exposed sections are secured by ropes.

The rest of the hike is easy in terms of terrain and leads to the wooded ridge of the Patschberg, which connects Weiz with the Almenland Nature Park. Numerous meadows and pastures line the path, but the best part is the fantastic views from the Patscha nose, from the summit and from the paths down to the Kreuzwirt.

The trail is not marked as such, we follow the Alpine Club trails Jägrsteig, trail no. 20, Gössental trail no. 3, trail no. 763 or 763a, "Gschaid/Eibisberg, trail no. 745", "Greith/St. Kathrein am Offenegg, trail no. 21" and the markings to the "Kreuzwirt". Please be sure to hike with a hiking map and the route description or with the outdooractive app.

For the return journey, you can order a shared cab to Biohof Schweiger in Greith/SAM station WZ3211, which will shorten the route by approx. 5 kilometers.

Start: Jägersteig parking lot in the Weizklamm gorge

  • The start of the Jägersteig is approximately at the level of the parking lot on the other side of the road. The start of the trail is a little steeper, but easy to walk on.
  • We cross a suspension bridge to reach a large cairn, where we take path no. 20 on the right, slightly downhill.
  • Pass through the "Wagenhütte" rock tunnel and continue along the path to the parking lot at the end of the gorge.
  • We take the asphalt road uphill to the left in the direction of "Gössental, Weg-Nr. 3", after approx. 800 meters we turn left at the crossroads.
  • A short stretch along the road, then we turn left onto the forest road.
  • We continue along the forest road or on footpaths until we change sides and cross a meadow uphill to the asphalt road. Along the asphalt road we pass the Höberl farm.
  • Two hairpin bends further on, the asphalt road turns into a gravel road. From here, the route continues along field and forest paths.
  • We come back to the tarmac road and turn left onto the cycle path "Anschluss 763, Sattelkreuz - St. Kathrein", slowly ascending along the farm track.
  • At the crossroads, stay on trail no. 763 and continue straight ahead.
  • Be careful not to miss the turn-off to the left (path no. 763 a).
  • We now head out onto the Patscha-Nase, past a rest area to the magnificent viewpoints above the Weizklamm gorge: in front of us the Wolfsattel with quarry, behind it the Schöckl and then the Passailer Kessel with the Rote Wand in the background. Please be careful here, it is a steep descent and there is no protection!
  • Continuing along the path, we reach the well-known "3 Churches View", from here we can see the churches of Fladnitz an der Teichalm, Passail and St. Kathrein am Offenegg.
  • We continue along the path to the next vantage point. From here we can see St. Kathrein and the Sommeralm area with the only wind turbine in the Almenland Nature Park.
  • We walk out along the edge of the precipice to the Patscha saddle with a wayside cross and rest area.
  • We continue straight ahead along the farm track in the direction of "Patschaberg/Gschaid, trail no. 763".
  • At the next crossroads at the small hut, we turn left uphill.
  • At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead.
  • We walk the last few meters to the summit cross along the pasture fence.
  • The Patscha summit cross is located on a high plateau with pasture, to the right in front of us we see the Zetz, to the right below is Weiz. The rock with the cross serves as an altar during mountain masses up here.
  • We continue straight ahead along the pasture fence in the direction of "St. Kathrein/Gschaid".
  • After the rest area, we keep to the right and continue our leisurely hike through the forest.
  • When we reach the farm track, we take it to the right in the direction of "Gschaid/Eibisberg, path no. 745".
  • We come to Greith and follow the road in the direction of St. Kathein am Offenegg until the junction "Greith/St. Kathrein am Offenegg, path no. 21" and turn left there.
  • In the district of Greith, we go out to the right on "Weg-Nr. 763/21" for 1.5 km in the direction of "St. Kathrein".
  • At the signpost "Weizklamm/Kreuzwirt, Weg-Nr. 21" we turn left and walk approx. 1 km to the farm vgl. Unterriegl.
  • Attention, here at the junction "Kreuzwirt" we turn right and walk past the large lime trees with the wayside cross.
  • We walk diagonally across the meadow until the markings indicate the entrance to the forest.
  • A steep downhill section until we reach the bridge, from which we now follow the road to the right.
  • We reach the valley floor and take the Sommeralmstraße to the left until we reach the crossroads at the "Kreuzwirt".
  • We turn left onto the Bundesstraße/B64 and now walk along the (unfortunately busy) road through the Weizklamm gorge to the parking lot at the entrance.
The reopened "Kreuzwirt" has already attracted many guests who enjoy the wood-fired roast pork, burgers and ribs.
