Krakau High altitude hike
From Unteretrach to Holzerhütte, continue to Woadschober (highest point) and then on a forest path to Schattensee.
Pristine forest with lush green moss, ancient spruce giants and slender larches are the main actors on this beautiful but also challenging ridge hike on the Schattnerberg high above the Krakautal valley. It is a circular hike with a shortcut at the Holzerhütte. Nature lovers and those seeking peace and quiet will be thrilled. Since there are no catered huts until you reach Schattensee, it is advisable to bring your own snack, as beautiful resting places abound.
At two huts there are fountains with clear, fresh drinking water. The main attraction of this ridge hike is the wonderful panoramic view of the Gstoder, the neighboring Lungau, the Etrachtal, the Rantental and the Prebertal. In addition, the beautiful mixed forest, but especially the many larches, the beautiful alpine pastures, which are still partly mowed, and the mysterious moorland areas are very exciting. Especially in autumn, this tour is a dream hike with many beautiful viewpoints.

The starting point is the mountaineering village partner Jagawirt in Unteretrach. On the short path to the first marker post (path no. 8 - towards Holzerhütte) you pass the beautiful Fortner Chapel from the 18th century and can admire the “Styrian Lord” there. This is the name given to St. Isidore, who floats on a rain cloud wearing leather trousers. During periods of drought, the saint was prayed to for rain. After the chapel past the Andexer horse farm, the small forest path begins, which leads steeply up into the forest of the Schattnerberg for the next 40 minutes. With an altitude difference of around 700 m, you have to expect 4 - 5 hours of walking time for the entire hike. From Woadschober you then hike downhill on a forest path to Schattensee, a beautiful, quiet moor lake.
It is 5 km from the Schattensee to the starting point at the Jagawirt.
You can stop off at the following establishments along the way:
- Gasthof Jagawirt
- Fischerhütte at the Schattensee (currently closed)
