About the offer

The Murtalbahn is as much a part of the Murau region as Murau beer, the Kreischberg or the legendary figure of Anna Neumann. It is not only the local public transport - the historic steam train, which paints a picture of a bygone railroad era in the Upper Mur Valley, is especially recognizable. On a route of 64 km (narrow gauge: gauge 760 mm) directly along the Mur, between Unzmarkt, Murau and Tamsweg, you can enjoy a steam train experience like no other! During the summer months, you can travel through the Murau region by steam train on three different steam train routes and various themed trips.

One of these routes is the "Great Steam Train from Murau to Tamsweg" and then back to Murau. A steam train ride for all those who want to relax and "steam" through the most beautiful side of the Mur Valley.

Information about the trip
The first stop is St. Lorenzen, followed by an approx. 20-minute stop in Stadl an der Mur.
- Filling the water tender of the steam locomotive
- Exit and photo opportunity
Longer stop in Tamsweg (approx. 1 hour and 45 minutes).
Time to stroll through the beautiful, historic market and enjoy the culinary delights. Then it's back to Murau.

Children for whom no fare is charged are not entitled to their own seat. It is not possible to transport bicycles.
Please note: If the steam locomotive has to be replaced by a diesel locomotive, for example due to adverse weather conditions (risk of fire due to extreme drought) or for safety reasons, no refunds can be made. Program and timetable subject to change.

A steam train ride on the Murtalbahn offers passengers nostalgic railroad romance. Historic steam locomotives and lovingly restored carriages add to the special flair of these trips. A truly picture-book landscape passes by along the green Mur River, which is full of beautiful impressions: from picturesque mountain scenery to forests and meadows. Musical entertainment on the train and an adjoining bar car ensure a good atmosphere and refreshments during the journey.
