From January 18, 2025, Graz Opera will present the epic masterpiece “Les Troyens” (The Trojans) by Hector Berlioz. This monumental work of grand opéra in five acts is based on Virgil's Aeneid and combines drama, passion and musical innovation. It will be performed for the first time at Graz Opera and will delight audiences with its opulent choruses, lyrical arias and impressive orchestral movements.
The opera focuses on the Trojan seeress Cassandra and Queen Dido of Carthage. The plot begins with the fall of Troy and follows the fugitives around Aeneas on their way to Italy. After the destruction of Troy, the survivors find refuge in Carthage, where Aeneas and Dido fall in tragic love. The opera tells an impressive story of hope, loss and the founding of Rome, which is at the heart of Berlioz's masterpiece.
Director Tatjana Gürbaca, known for her extraordinary productions, gives the “French Ring” a modern and exciting interpretation. Graz Opera, as the cultural highlight of the Graz Experience Region, provides the perfect stage for this work.
