Mariazeller Gründerweg - Etappe 3

The Mariazell Pilgrimage Route stretches over 192 kilometres and leads from St. Lambrecht Abbey in Murau, through the Murtal and the region Erzberg Leoben to the final destination of Mariazell in Hochsteiermark. On a total of 7 stages, on foot you discover devotional places of strength in the green heart of Styria. Reversed, the Pilgrim’s Trail from Mariazell to St. Lambrecht can be completed as a part of the famous Romea Strata, with Rome as the end of the journey.
The third stage of the Mariazell Founders' Trail leads from Seckau via the mountain church of Maria Schnee on the Hochalm to Mautern. A long mountain stage awaits pilgrims here, which should be well planned due to the scarcity of refreshment stops.

More information

We leave Seckau heading north (signpost at the monastery) and follow hiking trail 32 to Maria Schnee. Via Sonnwenddorf and Kühbergeralm we climb up to the Hochalm and the highest pilgrimage church in the Eastern Alps, Maria Schnee. Now we continue directly to the saddle at Krumpitzstein, the highest point of our pilgrimage hike. You are already in alpine terrain (be careful in wet, foggy and cold conditions, bring warm clothing with a hat and gloves!!!). We continue downhill over the Kugelstein to the Obere Bodenhütte (not serviced), from where we descend towards Feistritzgraben. The serviced Untere Bodenhütte (1,385 m) is not reached directly, but is only about 10 minutes away. If you don't stop for refreshments, follow path no. 984 to the left uphill through the Freudental valley to the Bremstein (10-minute detour to the summit). We hike along the ridge to the Antonikreuz and walk down to the Alpensteigerhütte (not open to the public). From here we continue along forest paths into the Liesingtal valley. Shortly before Mautern, the hiking trail meets the road to the summer toboggan run. We follow the road downhill and pass under the main road and railway line into the village.
The Murtal has railway stations in Unzmarkt, Judenburg, Zeltweg and Knittelfeld and is therefore very well connected to public transport.
