THE TOP EXCURSION DESTINATIONS IN The Graz Region

There are suitable and interesting sights for every preference: History and stories, impressive sacred and secular buildings, nature experiences and culinary delights. But also picturesque little towns, thermal spa fun and majestic white horses.

Highlights for culture lovers in Graz

Cultural stronghold Graz

High culture is urban culture - culture is omnipresent in the capital of Styria. And not just since 2003, when Graz was in the international spotlight as European Capital of Culture. However, the Capital of Culture year has undoubtedly left a lasting mark.

Culture in Graz means historical and modern sights, innovative theater and music events, festivals and an internationally renowned opera house. But it also means hospitality and culinary delights - and a unique atmosphere that makes Austria's second largest city so worth seeing and experiencing.

Urban-rural culture

CULTURAL DISCOVERIES IN THE GRAZ REGION

City - countryside - culture: an unbeatable trio! In addition to the Styrian capital, the surrounding region also has a lot to offer. It's a good thing that you can get from Graz to the exciting surrounding area in just a few minutes - and thus to many other cultural assets worth seeing in the region.

Mecca of excursion destinations

THE NORTH OF THE GRAZ REGION

Here, the gem of Frohnleiten, located directly on the River Mur, delights visitors with its extraordinary skyline and excellent gastronomy. A visit to the Austrian Open-Air Museum in Stübing is also well worth a visit; visitors can take a walk and get an overview of historic rural buildings and traditional crafts from all over Austria.

Nearby is the world's oldest surviving Cistercian monastery Rein, where those interested in culture can take a look behind the monastery walls. Graz's local mountain, the Schöckl, is also a popular excursion and hiking destination. It can be reached by cable car from St. Radegund, on foot or - for the very sporty - by bike.

Home of the Lipizzaner

The west of the region graz

In the west, you can follow in the footsteps of Arnold Schwarzenegger in Thal and visit the unique "white horses" at the Lipizzaner stud farm in Piber. They grow up here before the best of them move to the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.  Not far from Piber, the Barbara thermal spring bubbles up and invites you to relax, enjoy and unwind at the NOVA thermal spa in Köflach. Don't miss the St. Barbara Church in Bärnbach, which was designed by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

For those who prefer hiking on foot, the west of the Graz region offers many family-friendly hiking tours and summit conquests, alpine hut hikes, pilgrimage trails, reservoir experiences and the Steirarodl, an adventurous summer toboggan run.
