Railroad hiking trail Feldbach-Bad Gleichenberg (Bahnwanderweg Feldbach-Bad Gleichenberg)
Leisurely hike in the footsteps of the railroad from Feldbach to Bad Gleichenberg and by train or bus back to the starting point.
With this one-way hike from Feldbach to the well-known spa town of Bad Gleichenberg, you get to know the soft-formed East Styrian hill country at an average altitude of 300 meters above sea level. Since the start is at the ÖBB train station, one strolls comfortably through the center of Feldbach before the actual hike. The railroad hiking trail is led on low-traffic side roads, along wide field and meadow paths, to narrow paths in the forest. Again and again you walk right next to the tracks. For those who find the entire route of about 20 km too long, there is the option of choosing a stop ahead of time and returning to Feldbach by train or bus. The history of the Feldbach-Bad Gleichenberg provincial railroad - often just called the Gleichenberg Railway - dates back to 1886, when the project was first presented. Many decades later, in 1931, the 21.2 km long railroad line was opened. The end of the hike is Bad Gleichenberg, the place that was shaped by the element of water: it has been proven that already the Romans made use of the Gleichenberg healing springs. The health resort was founded in 1834 and still today the approx. 20 ha large spa park with exotic trees and shrubs impresses.

Detailed information on how to get to us can be found

We start at the ÖBB train station in Feldbach walk over the Raab bridge towards the center. At the end of the main square we keep to the right and pass the Grazer Tor. Staying on the right side of the road, we see the sign for the "Gleichenberger Bahnwanderweg" at a crosswalk. Here we go to the left, along the Ottokar-Kernstock-Straße, until we keep to the right at a crossing and continue walking in the direction of Kalvarienberg. Passing the hospital, we now follow the road slightly uphill until we see a yellow sign on the left "In the footsteps of volcanoes", which indicates the entrance to the Kalvarienbergweg. Now still the stations uphill and we reach the Calvary. From here we have a beautiful view of Feldbach and can see the Riegersburg in the distance. After the short break we hike slightly downhill, pass by a self-service refrigerator and now follow the road that leads through the sparsely populated area and subsequently through the forest. At the road crossings we pay attention to the well-marked path. Shortly after a road junction, the trail branches off to the left onto a dirt road. From here we leave the asphalt road and walk parallel to the railroad tracks until we reach the stop Prädiberg. From the stop we walk along the asphalt road for a while until we see the turnoff into the forest on the left. The trail is clearly marked and so we cross the tracks several times and reach the stops Fischa and Burgfried. Shortly after the Burgfried train stop, we leave the tracks and hike downhill along corridor and forest paths to Maierdorf. After the end of the village we turn left in the direction of Ludersdorf and after about 300 m we go right uphill, to cross the tracks shortly after and follow the road uphill. After we have reached the hill near Hochegg, we go along the road slightly downhill until we reach the fork on the right side with the inscription "Bahntrassenweg - Nur bei Schönwetter" The slightly longer path leads over the stop Hofstätten and joins the "Sommerweg" again after the stop Trautmannsdorf. This "Sommerweg" is recommended, as we pass through beautiful beech forests and over meadow areas until we reach Trautmannsdorf. Along the road we now go slightly uphill again until we come to a bus shelter. Here we reach the "normal path" again and go past the bus shelter on the right, along Reserlstraße, past the Leitgeb wine tavern and subsequently through the forest until we reach the Hohe-Warte path. From now on we walk downhill through the populated area until we reach the traffic circle at the bottom of the valley. We go straight ahead and after a short time we keep left and see the train station Bad Gleichenberg already in front of us.
Due to the length of the route, it is recommended to leave early enough and also be equipped for the snack break. Important: Obtain timetable information in advance.
